Free Comics, (Zombie) Dinner, and a Movie
Happy New Year!
(And welcome to our new home on Substack.)
I think my daughter best expressed what most of us feel about the holidays in this English class assignment from a few years back:
Still, I hope you got a chance to relax (some) and recharge the batteries.
I know I did.
Some news broke while we were away...
I was asked to write a short story for the Free Comic Book Day edition of KULT CABLE, based on the comedy show of the same name from the hip hop group Ho99o9.
The comic comes courtesy of Behemoth, and as you can see from the pic above, it’s loaded with talent... and it's FREE.
My short is based on this incredibly bizarre Army ad from the '70s.
Is it real? Is it an incredibly well done spoof? No idea!
The story is illustrated by the phenomenal Victor Santos, who was a dream to work with. Big thanks to editor Kevin Roditeli for asking me aboard and putting us together.
Pick it up in May... and ALL HAIL Behemoth!
We’re #1!
Meanwhile, CBR listed volume 1 of NIGHTMARE THEATER as #1 on their list of top 10 indie comics you could buy at LA Comic Con.
This book is bursting at the seams with talented creators--to have it recognized by one of the premiere comics sites out there was a great way to end the year.
Here's what they had to say:
"Nightmare Theater is a massive horror anthology book consisting of over 35 stories across 272 pages. With works written by a myriad of authors, including some featured on this list, brought together by editors Clay Adams and D.E. Schrader, this anthology has a taste of everything horror and comic fans want.
From science fiction trips and Frankenstein-inspired works to body horror and slasher homages, Nightmare Theatre tackles every corner of horror. The anthology is bookended and interspersed by the tales of and introductions from the “Trio of Terror,” who have created the titular theater to feed their dark entity, lending the anthology an overarching narrative."
DEADSKINS! Part 5 has arrived…
That's right... six big boxes of comics got dumped off at the Fried Diner the other day, which means the shipping and receiving department is now in full swing.
Some of you may have already received your books… if not, hang tight. They’re coming soon!
The Future of Horror Cinema?
Meanwhile, FRIED's own Alexandre O. Philippe brought this to my attention:
Netflix forced a bot to watch over 400,000 hours worth of horror movies... and then write its own.
The result may be the most hilarious (and quotable) four minutes of “cinema” you will ever see.
CHECK OUT "MR. PUZZLES WANTS YOU TO BE LESS ALIVE"
That's all for now.
Gotta get back to shipping DEADSKINS! and lettering BLAZING BLADE OF FRANKENSTEIN #2.
These comics don't make themselves, you know...
