Killer Winnie the Pooh...?
Walt Disney is spinning.
Soooo…. I was supposed to be on vacation this week, but the best way to make God laugh is to tell him your plans.
Instead, 3/4ths of my house caught Covid, and in between fevers, we had to reschedule everything.
Meanwhile, I binge-watched the hilarious BBC/Showtime collaboration EPISODES (starring Matt LeBlanc) and dug into Shelly Bond’s excellent FILTH & GRAMMAR:
I also had plenty of time to surf the web, so I compiled—just for you!—some handy-dandy links that kept my attention from the sickbed.
Starting With This:
No, your eyes are not deceiving you.
That’s A.A. Milne’s beloved Piglet and Pooh, menacing a scantily-clad lady in a horror movie called WINNIE THE POOH: BLOOD AND HONEY.
The film is being made by the London-based Jagged Edge Productions, which also made The Curse of Humpty Dumpty and The Legend of Jack and Jill. So, it seems they’ve got form for putting a bloody take on childhood stories.
But how are they able to make a Winnie the Pooh movie? Winnie the Pooh is almost synonymous with Disney at this point after the studio turned A.A. Milne’s classic children’s books into a collection of movies and the recent Christopher Robin film. Until now, Disney had the exclusive rights to the character… but Milne’s work entered the public domain earlier this year, meaning that anyone can now adapt those classic characters as they see fit. We just weren’t expecting it to get quite so dark, quite so quickly.
With a slew of fan-favorite characters entering the public domain soon, things are about to get real interesting, real quick.
(More on that later.)
Speaking of Public Domain…
Book Riot has a list of classic novels being serialized in a brand new format: the Substack.
Many of our favorite novels of yore were originally published as serial “episodes,” including some that may be of interest to BLAZING BLADE OF FRANKENSTEIN fans.
The newest craze is to recreate that experience with new technology, so click the link above and get chapters delivered to your inbox on the regular.
Sounds pretty dang neat to me.
But What About Words with Pictures?
You want comics?
Universally adored actor Bruce Campbell, he of Evil Dead fame, is penning a brand new SGT. ROCK story, and hell if it doesn’t sound fantastic.
Bloody Disgusting writes:
The story begins in Berlin, 1944. The Nazis are flanked on all fronts by the combined Allied forces, and defeat seems inevitable. In a last-ditch effort to turn the tide of the war, Hitler and his team of evil scientists create a serum that resurrects their dead soldiers, creating an army of the dead even stronger than they were in life.
Written by horror icon Bruce Campbell, with art by comics legend Eduardo Risso, this is the latest entry in DC’s blockbuster DC HORROR PRESENTS line (previous titles include DC Horror Presents: Soul Plumber and DC Horror Presents: The Conjuring: The Lover).
Issue #1 of 6 is on sale September 27, 2022!

I’ll read it for sure, but the Bruce Campbell story that has me the most excited?
The 20th anniversary of Bubba Ho-Tep.
You Wanna See Something Really Exciting?
Not sure what’s going on over at the NY Times, but the Paper of Record is now straight up posting cockroach porn (WARNING: GRAPHIC VIDEO!):
On Second Thought…
Maybe we should stick with comics.
PBOW funded last week thanks to a big surge at the end—which came in handy since I was sick in bed and couldn’t really push it:
Thanks to all the Frequent Friers who came out strong and got our little bit of nonsense over the finish line!
This may well be our most insane issue yet, and we can’t wait to get it into your hot little hands.
Parting Question for You…
The Winnie the Pooh slasher movie got me thinking…
Public Domain comics are all the rage on Kickstarter right now, with Cthulhu and Lovecraft titles seeming like a license to print money.
(And BLAZING BLADE OF FRANKENSTEIN not doing so bad, either.)
What do you think about Public Domain comics?
Do you like seeing creators tackling some of your favorite characters from literature?
Or do you just want to see brand new concepts in your mailbox?
Enquiring minds want to know,
